Rise and shine orange

My second Queensday in the Netherlands was as great or even better than the first one. I got to witness the historical moment where the Queen of last 30 years handed over her position to her son Willem-Alexander. 'Koningendag' is traditionally celebrated outiside; people of all ages dress up in orange and simply have fun. In Amsterdam you can see the canalboats carrying joyful people, the streets filled with adults and children selling second hand items and many festivals around the city playing good music. I paid respect for the occasion with orange hair and lots of dancing at Rotzooii festival. Next year it'll be Kingsday. Different date, same ammount of fun I'm sure.

Some party beats and my new cool earrings I wore at Amsterdam Dance event. Awsome for conversations during loud tracks in dark dancing events. Exclamation point for agreeing and question mark for when I can`t hear or understand the person I´m talking to. These songs are from some of the DJs I saw at ADE. I totally fell in love with the set by a guy called Rarash. A good DJ reacts to the audience with his music (and plays live) and thats excactly what he did. Another more amazing song after another. Unfortunately I couldn`t find a set on youtube that would`ve made him justice, but I highly recommend to check him out if you can. Me and my friends certainly danced our hearts out. Good music and good company, thats all this girl really needs...but a nice show with fireworks is pretty fine too.
Tour de Rotterdam
26 Oct / 05:47 PM by Hanna Toivakka

Another fine week spent in the Netherlands. It was the ADE-week this time, which means thousands of tourists and hundreds of thousands pairs of tired dancing feet. Amsterdam dance event is the leading electronic music platform and the biggest club festival in the world. Meaning close to 300 events in 75 venues during five days in the heart of it all, Amsterdam. Great event, great music and great atmosphere. But more of that later.
I also had a beautiful day spent in the second biggest city of Netherlands. Rotterdam is totally different from all the other cities I´ve visited in Holland. Due to the bombing in the second world war it doesn`t have the same old charm that for example Amsterdam has. What it does have is totally mismatching buildings and experimental architecture. I mostly prefer old romantic style building but for example the yellow cubig houses in the Rotterdam blaak, are deniably cool. And practical or not, people actually live in them. My favourite eating place so far, is the Oude haven (Old harbour) which has lovely restaurants next to the water. And this time we were lucky to have sunshine and +21 degrees, in October! Now back in Helsinki with -2c and the first snow on the ground. Not complaining though...I like a bit of snow on my winter.
Fields of gold

Fall and its amazing colours, most inspiring time of the year by far. A moment in the nature takes you far from the troubles of normal lifes madness. These fields can be found just hundred meters from my hectic apartment building living. Have to admit though that even winter seems better when the sun is up. Happier thoughts and faces all around. That ball of light turns even old fields to gold.

All cities are beautiful

Visited Germany for the first time ever last week. I was so excited to be able to finally use the over 10 years of studying the language but all I was able to say was "danke schön". The trip was made for my internship to Tanzmesse (contemporary dance fair) in Düsseldorf. I spent most of my time at the fair or watching dance performances so I only had a few hours to explore the city while I was there. Düsseldorf is not the most attractive city but I think it definately has a unique charm to it. I found the old city quite fascinating with its number of different style of buildings and old bars and coffee-places. I somehow managed to navigate myself also to the most expensive shopping street where I did a lot of awsome (window) shopping. I definately want to visit Berlin, Hamburg and Munich some day too. Maybe by then I´ll be able to say "auf wiedersehen" as well!
BCN: The amazing Gaudi
03 Sep / 11:28 PM by Hanna Toivakka

Barcelona is full of amazing architecture but just only one man really owns the city and that is Antoni Gaudi. The never finished Sagrada Familia, the wavey cool Casa Mila and colourfull fish-like Casa Batlo are very famous tourist attractions. My personal favourite is the just unbelieavable creation Park Guell. Its fairytale-like buildings, divers details and stunning view of the whole city could`ve kept me there for hours and hours. Like most of the great artists, also Gaudi was famous to be very difficult and obstinate, specially at old age. Another interesting and obstinate (to leave) character was the guitar player at the top of the Park Guell hill. The weirdest, most disgusting and funniest singing performance I´ve ever seen. This man was sweating and singing (screaming) in a full leopard suit the whole entire day in +34 degrees. The price you gotta pay to be spectacular...
Tourists number one: Barcelona
02 Aug / 06:13 PM by Hanna Toivakka

Sun, fun and countless things to do and see. That`s what a last minute trip to Barcelona will get you. The rainy weather here in Holland called for some drastic measures last week and very good ones they ended up to be. I spent three months in Madrid last year but I never got the time to visit Barcelona. I was very surprised how different these two cities are. Barcelona has the mountains, the beach and the insane amount of tourists. I really enjoyed my five days in this great city and I have hundreds of pictures to prove it...
