Rise and shine orange

My second Queensday in the Netherlands was as great or even better than the first one. I got to witness the historical moment where the Queen of last 30 years handed over her position to her son Willem-Alexander. 'Koningendag' is traditionally celebrated outiside; people of all ages dress up in orange and simply have fun. In Amsterdam you can see the canalboats carrying joyful people, the streets filled with adults and children selling second hand items and many festivals around the city playing good music. I paid respect for the occasion with orange hair and lots of dancing at Rotzooii festival. Next year it'll be Kingsday. Different date, same ammount of fun I'm sure.
Land of the midnight sun

We certainly live in a country with huge contrasts. In the winter we only have a couple of hours of sunlight per day and in the middle of the summer the sun doesn't set at all. Also the temperature difference can be over 50 degrees between the coldest and the hottest months of the year.
This video captures perfectly the things I love about the Finnish summertime. For those few months people come alive and really enjoy life. I always encourage people to visit Finland in the summer and this is why. A magical atmosphere that you can´t find anywhere else. Check out more of best of Finland here.

I like my thoughts among the snowflakes

May I present to you Spring - the Finland edition. Somehow I always fool myself to thinking that March is the month when spring starts. The snowstorms and new huge piles of snow end up prooving me wrong pretty much every year. Hopeful thinking I guess. But! There are positve sides to all of this. Snowing makes everything really peaceful and beautiful. These pictures are from a small village called Korpilahti in middle of Finland. Theres this big beautiful lake, huge forests, boats and horses and space -a lot of it. A perfect getaway from the hectic citylife and busy schedules. And the best thing is, I always end up getting the best ideas and inspirations while it`s snowing. Better not move to the Sahara dessert anytime soon then, atleast before the retirement days anyway.

Where ever you will go

I found this amazing photo serie called "Follow me to". Russian photographer Murad Osmann follows his girlfriend around the globe, capturing their jorney in this adorable way. A perfect reminder of all the yet unseen places. I see the story being about so much more than different places though. He never lets go of her hand.
“For me photography is about capturing things other people might miss. It’s a way to communicate, a way to bring images that I hold in my mind to the surface. I want others to look at my work and see beyond the obvious.” See more of Murads stuff here.
Make me Indian

The life of Pi, Slumdog millionaire, Eat Pray Love and The Darjeeling Limited. Movies that I´ve seen in the past six months, all based in India. Had to have somekind of effects on me. One is that I´m obsessively planning a trip there, a tour that would inhold India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Other is that I´ve subconsciously been buying jewellery that refers to that amazing culture. I carry the small eye necklace you see in most of the pictures with me all the time. The eye represents the blocking of the evil eye in the Hindu religion and eventhough I´m not a believer I like the idea of it.
In India the way of dressing up depends on the area. Mumbai is considered to be the fashion capital of the country, where women wear the traditional over one shoulder saris. Jewelry and make up also vary quite a lot depending on the occasion and place. The tradion I have fallen for the most though, has to be the henna tattoo patterns. Mehndi is typically applied during special Hindu occasions like weddings and festivals, where many women have Henna applied to their hands and feet. I found my pattern from youtube and it was actually really easy to do. Besides new lovely jewellery I think I´ve found a new hobby.

Old charm

I snapped a few pictures of some retro things around my grandparents house. My lovely grandparents think they´re perfectly on this time, my mom -their daughter says everything is horribly old and breaking down and I just absolutely love all the antique details. It probably takes a generation or two to start appriciating these kind of items. And the same applies to clothes of cource. My favourite thing as a child was to go through my grandmas closets and admire her dresses from the 60`s and 70`s. Even now everytime I visit them I get something old but surprisingly up to date to go with me. This time I left with four oversized gardigans..which would cost at least 40€ at clothing stores right now. And one of them was actually my grandpas. One thing I know I won`t appreciate even after a decade, is the hairstyle I used to have back in the day. Good try with the cute collar though mom, didn`t save the look anyway.

I was 18 when I lived on my own abroad for the first time. Just graduated from High-school, clueless and naive as a small babybird from the nest. And as nest this city of mine can truly be called. Even though Helsinki is the capital it is extremely safe compared to other big cities of the world. I was used to things getting done as promised and never afraid to walk alone in the dark. After three months in Milan, two phones poorer and heck of a lot more scared I knew the case wasn`t the same everywhere. I was introduced to a life of parties, disgusting old casting directors hitting on young girls and to a modelling-agency that didn`t end up paying anyones paychecks. Tuff school but a very useful one. After that I`ve lived in Istanbul, Paris, Milan again, Madrid and last summer I spent in the Netherlands. Almost everytime I`ve missed home at some points and gotten disappointed several times, but also gained so much and grown.
I`m very grateful for all my experiences abroad and actually ended up discovering a real gypsy soul in me. After every three months or so I find myself wanting to leave my nest again. Go somewhere new, discover different cultures and get to know new people. After coming back from Holland in August it starts to be that time again. With age and new interests also the way of wanting to travel changes. I`m not willing to spend my time talking about hip-measurements with other models or go to parties three times a week. My dream right now would be to travel around South-Africa or India and get to know the people and the cultures there. After all, the things I value most now, are the real relationships I`ve established and the lessons I`ve learned from spending time with people coming from all parts of the world.
Say what?!

Some party beats and my new cool earrings I wore at Amsterdam Dance event. Awsome for conversations during loud tracks in dark dancing events. Exclamation point for agreeing and question mark for when I can`t hear or understand the person I´m talking to. These songs are from some of the DJs I saw at ADE. I totally fell in love with the set by a guy called Rarash. A good DJ reacts to the audience with his music (and plays live) and thats excactly what he did. Another more amazing song after another. Unfortunately I couldn`t find a set on youtube that would`ve made him justice, but I highly recommend to check him out if you can. Me and my friends certainly danced our hearts out. Good music and good company, thats all this girl really needs...but a nice show with fireworks is pretty fine too.
Tour de Rotterdam
26 Oct / 05:47 PM by Hanna Toivakka

Another fine week spent in the Netherlands. It was the ADE-week this time, which means thousands of tourists and hundreds of thousands pairs of tired dancing feet. Amsterdam dance event is the leading electronic music platform and the biggest club festival in the world. Meaning close to 300 events in 75 venues during five days in the heart of it all, Amsterdam. Great event, great music and great atmosphere. But more of that later.
I also had a beautiful day spent in the second biggest city of Netherlands. Rotterdam is totally different from all the other cities I´ve visited in Holland. Due to the bombing in the second world war it doesn`t have the same old charm that for example Amsterdam has. What it does have is totally mismatching buildings and experimental architecture. I mostly prefer old romantic style building but for example the yellow cubig houses in the Rotterdam blaak, are deniably cool. And practical or not, people actually live in them. My favourite eating place so far, is the Oude haven (Old harbour) which has lovely restaurants next to the water. And this time we were lucky to have sunshine and +21 degrees, in October! Now back in Helsinki with -2c and the first snow on the ground. Not complaining though...I like a bit of snow on my winter.
3rd round

These photos were taken over a year a go in Madrid, in Retiro Park. I`ve actually shown pictures of the day twice before but these ones were taken in secret. Young spanish photography student Maria Villacorta was the assistant during the day and was helping everyone on the team with another friend of hers. Clearly she has quite a lot of talent already by looking at these pictures. I simply adore the style! The pictures give out a very special feeling that is very hard to capture on camera. Kind of like looking at photos from hundred years ago.
Check out the outcome here and my (not so special) behind the scene photos here.
